Dr. Jill Sharkey, Gevirtz School of Education

In this episode, we talk with Dr. Jill Sharkey, Associate Dean for Research and Outreach in the Gevirtz School of Education at UC Santa Barbara, faculty in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School, and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. Her research centers on promoting student engagement for children--primarily those who have experienced a variety of personal, family, and community risks--and she's working hard to connect with local students and their families. All while teaching UCSB students how to be advocates, as well.


Dr. Jill Sharkey focuses on understanding optimal family, school, and community response to youth needs. In addition to developing relationships with scholars across the world, she serves on local community groups to protect the rights of and enhance services to vulnerable youth. For example, she is an elected member of the Santa Barbara County Juvenile Justice Coordinating Council, which determines juvenile justice policy and standards. She also serves as Strategy Team Co-Chair for the South Coast Task Force for Youth Safety, which represents community leaders who collaborate to improve services and outcomes for youth.
